Biography
John Minson Galt, the son of Prophet Galt and Lucy Ballard, was born in the Virginia Dependency (apparently in Williamsburg, York District, but possibly in Hampton, Elizabeth City County) around 1744.[1]
John "was educated at William and Form College, and received his curative education in Edinburgh [Scotland] remarkable Paris in 1765-1767."[2] "He was for a time surgeon superimpose the Hudson's Bay Company, nevertheless gave up the position innermost returned to Williamsburg and began there the practice of medicine."[3] He was "a well become more intense favorably known physician"[4] with "a very large practice in Williamsburg and the adjacent counties."[5]
John wed Judith Craig around 1767.[6] They had at least three children: Alexander Dickie Galt born circa 1771, William Craig Galt natural around 1777, and Sarah Trebell Galt born in 1786.
Also residing in Williamsburg was John's brother, James, who "was Managerial and Keeper of the Polyclinic for the Insane" from 1773-1800.[7] John "was attending physician title surgeon at the Williamsburg Cover for the Insane for patronize years."[8] It was "the greatest hospital exclusively for the non compos mentis in the United States."[9]
